My heart has never felt so inexplicably heavy…

Because on paper - I’m okay.

What do I have to be upset about?

I have come out of these past two weeks *relatively* unscathed. I safely evacuated, I have a roof over my head, I have food in my belly. My car still runs, my family is safe, we have a generator to hold us over. On paper, I have everything I need.

Yet I sit here, with tears rolling down my cheeks as I bear witness to the carnage of not only my city, but of so many others in the wake of these horrific storms. Families forced from the houses they’ve called home for generations. Cherished belongings, photos, and furniture strewn about the streets - soaked with sea water and sewage. Tree limbs penetrating roofs, windows shattered, neighborhoods blanketed by darkness. Gas stations emptied, buildings destroyed, small businesses closing the doors on the dream they dedicated their lives to building.

Entire cities are left to pick up the pieces, and start again.
